Lifestyle Diseases (LSDs) have their roots in the gastrointestinal tract, normally called the gut. According to Ayurveda, it is the seat of our Soul and Strength. Let us see why Ayurveda placed it on such a high pedestal.
The Burning Fire of The Stomach:
The stomach contains a liquid called gastric juice. One of the main components of the gastric juice is hydrochloric acid, which is so strong (pH varies from 1 to 3); it can destroy most harmful bacteria in food. Up to 2 litres of this strong juice is produced every 24 hours. Any reduction in its quantity and quality, which greatly depends on your food and lifestyle, can have the following health consequences:
- Ulcer causing bacteria may increase in number
- Iron from vegetarian diets may not be fully absorbed
- Vitamin B12 may not be absorbed
- Protein may not be digested fully
Based on the discussion above, it is safe to say you are not ‘What you eat’ but you are ‘What your stomach absorbs’.
Hydrochloric acid, which is secreted in the stomach, helps in destroying most of the harmful bacteria in food.
The Leaky Gut:
Did you ever suffer from an unexplained fatigue, i.e. you feel sick and tired, but your doctor says that there is nothing wrong with you. Or you might have heard about dreaded diseases like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases like lupus. A Leaky Gut is responsible for all of them and many more.
Let us understand as to why the gut starts leaking. The one cell thick barrier in the intestine stands between your health, microbes and food toxins. This barrier consists of cells and tight junctions between the cells. The cells are designed to pass nutrients into the blood while blocking the microbes and small food particles. But these cells can get inflamed and this transforms the tight joints into loose joints that let microbes and food particles pass into your blood, which is known as the Leaky Gut syndrome. This cell inflammation can be caused by:
- Poor diet
- Chronic stress
- Toxin overload
- Bacterial imbalance
Research has shown that Leaky Gut could be the cause of food allergies, low energy, joint pain, thyroid disease, slow metabolism and inflammation throughout your system. According to the Journal of Diabetes, there is a strong body of evidence pointing to Leaky Gut as a major cause of autoimmune diseases including Type 1 Diabetes.
If you’ve ever seen a child with autism experience a mood swing, this can be caused by intestinal permeability. Gluten and Casein-Free Diets have proven effective for many children with autism because these proteins can leak through the gut and then recirculate and act on the brain similarly to an opioid drug. So, in many cases, if you can heal the gut you can heal the brain and the rest of the body.
Gut, Brain Axis (GBA):
The gut nervous system is often referred to as the second brain.
Research has shown that food intake, regulation of glucose & fat metabolism, insulin secretion & sensitivity as well as bone metabolism depend on the proper functioning of the GBA. Diet and stress levels can affect the GBA profoundly.
Bi-directional signalling between the gut and the brain is responsible for several metabolic disorders. Stress related psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety usually come hand-in-hand with gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel disease (IBS). This correlation is evidence of the importance of the Gut-Brain Axis.
Your Health Depends On Intestinal Bacteria:
The human body carries about 100 trillion microorganisms in the intestines. This means that there are ten times as many bacteria as human cells in the human body. These bacteria serve the body by protecting it against infections, breaking down fats and carbohydrates, neutralising drugs and carcinogens, modulating intestinal motility and making visceral perception possible. A decrease in desirable gut bacteria can lead to deterioration in intestinal health, neuro-hormonal disturbances and/or immune functions and ultimately diseases.
Good bacteria in the colon produce fat by digesting fiber. This fat helps in strengthening the liver.
Diabetes Is An Intestinal Disorder:
The common feeling among some healthcare professionals is that diabetes is caused when the pancreas do not produce enough insulin. In healthy people, more than 50 to 70% of insulin production is in response to the gut hormones (incretins). So keeping the gut healthy does not only prevent the onset of diabetes, it also keeps obesity at bay.
In view of all the factors described above, our ancestors were correct when they viewed the gut as the seat of our Soul and Strength.
